God of War Ragnarok broke the internet last night, capping an impressive PlayStation Showcase with a laggard that revealed an aged, more combative Atreus, an angry Freya, a glimpse of Thor, electric potential Allies, and a badgering measure of New enemies. It was epic and emotional and just, everything.

GamesRadar+ radius to the two men that made IT all happen, Eric Williams, director of God of War Ragnarok, and Cory Barlog, the director of 2018's Divinity of War. Luckily, it seemed to be a peaceful transfer of power between the cardinal veterans of Sony Santa Monica.

"We had this shop at the source of the game and they had this thing where if someone was succession your job, you had to hand down them a 101 in that Book of Job," explains Sir Bernanrd Williams, who has worked on the God of War serial since 2004.

"So Cory organism Cory, you know, He gave Pine Tree State a blank ratified stamp pad and IT's got 'Game Directing 101' at the top, and and so in quotes under it in very, real fine print IT said 'everything' and so the rest of information technology was lacuna. And I knew he was trolling ME. But I also knew atomic number 2's beingness the most honest, because he's always that way with Maine. In that kindness, sometimes there are arguments because information technology's just like, 'I'm gonna be straight with you.'"

It's hard to sum up the affection that this is said with through the written intelligence, but it understandably gets to Barlog.

"You son of a bitch, you're gonna make me cry," Barlog replies.

"One of the things that we've had many discussions about, and one of the things that I'm always so affected with – and unmatched of the hardest things I mean about this job – is pull out the Truth you don't want to human face. Exit deep to those things that scar you or scare the shit unconscious of you," says Barlog.

"That is the food grain, that little sand-rabbit-sized ingrain of truth that you're going to get therein's going to fire a good portion of this experience. I felt alike I could have non even given that advice because, you know, instinctively, I think he lives in that place of being able to examine... I think helium is more fearless than he knows."

Staying stupid

Williams says if he could time travel back to 2004, to the Eric Ted Williams that was first starting at the studio, his advice would be to stay wooden-headed. "When you're kind of speechless, you're non afraid to ask out questions. The word 'expert' is kind of, like, really sad to me. Because information technology basically dates you, because you know everything about something that's already done. Well, what we make out is dissimilar regular. No one's ever done what we've done the same way. So you want to stay that hungry kind of student and be very curious."

Williams wants to hold onto that feeling of beingness a kid and saving the money from his summertime job to steal a game. Reading the notes on the back of the box en route home. Barlog, who has several experience with these things, can't contain his delight at the story. "I love this story even more now because I didn't know about the Slurpee detail," he says. "Information technology's like watching a DVD box set of the same story with five minutes of unreleased footage added to it."

Spell Williams mightiness non feel totally comfortable for the limelight just sooner or later, the excited reactions to the trailer are important, and something he will hang in to as the long exploitation outgrowth continues.
